Principal's Notes
At the time of writing, Christmas is exactly six weeks away. While it may seem as though the year is winding down, it remains a very busy time at School. WACE exams are well underway, the Year 11 cohort are just about to commence their Year 12 studies, Year 10 and 9 exams are not far away, Year 6 students are finishing their final tasks as Primary School students, Year 5’s are on camp in Toodyay, the annual Art Exhibition commences next week, the list could go on! My challenge for all students is to remain focussed for the last few weeks, knowing that an extended period of rest and relaxation awaits, and of course all the joy of the festive season.
Learning Diversity
I am pleased to report that the School has now employed two outstanding educators to lead our School Community in the area of Learning Diversity. The new Head of Learning Diversity - Primary will be our very own Laura Cosnett. Prior to PMACS, Laura has held leadership positions as Head of Learning Support in International Schools in Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Singapore, and on arriving in Australia lectured at Curtin University in Inclusive Education. The new Head of Learning Diversity -Secondary will be Tanya Thorp. Tanya has previously implemented extensive learning support frameworks at both Wesley College and John Septimus Roe Anglican Community School and has recently been working in a consulting role. These significant appointments will provide a wealth of experience in the leadership of learning support as we continue to build on the work already being done with students who have diverse learning needs.
Year 12 Valedictory Celebrations
It was a week of mixed emotions as the School recently fare welled its Graduating Class of 2021. The signature event of the Year 12’s final week is a Valedictory Assembly, a fitting celebration of the achievements and contributions of the graduating class to the School over many years. At the Valedictory Assembly, it was my privilege to speak on behalf of the School to wish the students well:
Good evening ladies and gentlemen, staff and students. It is a great privilege and honour to recognise and thank the 2021 Graduating Class for their contribution to Peter Moyes Anglican Community School.
I wish to welcome the following group of students in particular and ask them to stand as I call out their names:
Trinity Adair, Jack De Cinque, Naomi Denston, Hudson Durell, Grace Foster, Ella Freestone, Brock Greig, Hannah Klonowski, Asha Lague, Levi Latif, Flynn Leveridge, Amy MacDonald, Alexandra McCormack, Dylan McPhan, Jacob Miles, William Muntz, Mia Nicholson, Louie Reglar, Jake Sibly, Jay Solly, Georgia Taylor and Ethan White.
These 22 students commenced at our School in Kindergarten way back in 2008 and along with Daniel Mann and Dian Nell who started in Pre-Primary in 2009, are together as they graduate after 13 years of attendance at Peter Moyes - this deserves both a special welcome and a special round of applause!
Year 12 students, it is undoubtedly a time of mixed emotions as you contemplate the end of your journey as a student here at Peter Moyes. Each of you will have your own PMACS story to tell based on your experiences and memories of events and people you have encountered along the way. There will be stories of laughter and tears, exhilaration and frustration, success and disappointment, celebration and commiseration. The highs and lows are the inevitable result of putting yourself out there, testing your boundaries, taking calculated risks and making the most of every opportunity.
Your growth and maturity over this past year has been professionally fulfilling to observe. Despite the challenges thrown your way by a global pandemic, you embraced all that Peter Moyes had to offer, discovered your passions, and positively impacted those around you. You consistently demonstrated hard work and determination in the face of uncertainty and for that you should be exceptionally proud.
As you depart our School, I implore you to have big dreams and ambitions. Ultimately there are no great secrets to achieving success. It is a result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure. These qualities have been instilled in you during your time at Peter Moyes and I have no doubt that you will be successful at whatever you put your minds to.
Over the course of this Valedictory week, I hope that you have been able to take some time to reflect on, and to be grateful for, all those people who have played a part, large or small, in helping you graduate from our school. It might be a teacher you remember fondly, a friendship you have made or an experience that you have had. Either way, the Peter Moyes community has played a role at shaping the person that you are now and the person you are yet to become. As such, it is now time to give thanks to those people who have helped you along the way.
To the parents of our Year 12 students, I thank you for all that you have done to support your children. For some, you may have doubted that this day would ever arrive. For others, it may seem like only yesterday that you enrolled your child at our school. We thank you for choosing to send your child to Peter Moyes Anglican Community School. Choosing a school is a big decision for parents. We understand the sacrifices that families make to send their children to our school, and we remain ever grateful that you chose to do so.
During the course of their schooling, the majority of students here tonight have established significant and lasting relationships with staff based on trust and mutual respect. This was particularly evident at today’s leavers assembly as demonstrated by the various awards presented by students to their favourite teachers. On behalf of all Peter Moyes students, but particularly our departing Year 12 cohort, I thank all of the staff at this school for their patience, kindness, passion, energy, and dedication.
I especially want to acknowledge this evening the Head of Year 12, Mrs Karen Swain, or Swaino, or Mother Hen or Lil Swain Dog as she was known as today. Mrs Swain has done everything in her power to make Year 12 such a memorable year for the class of 2021. Each Valedictory Event was meticulously planned by Mrs Swain to ensure the best possible experience for her little Cherubs!
Finally, to the graduating class of 2021 assembled here as a cohort for the very last time, please accept our collective thanks for the contributions that you have made to the life and development of Peter Moyes Anglican Community School. We are so very proud of what you have achieved.
As you begin a new chapter in your lives, know that you go with the blessings and best wishes of our entire community. And while we say farewell, it is not goodbye. We hope that you will remain in contact with us through the Alumni Association or simply by visiting us from time to time. Please remember that we will always be here to support you, even if we lose sight of you. Rest assured that if you ever find yourself in trouble, we will do what we can to help you. You will always be part of this School Community.
My final piece of advice for you as you head into adulthood is to continually learn and grow. Try to always be inspired by people, places, and communities, and seek out experiences to enrich your knowledge and character. Dream incredible dreams, work extremely hard, live life to the fullest. Be curious, be agile, be strong, and be sensitive. Love yourself, love others, stand up for yourself and stand up for those who may need it more than you. Be open to life and be free in your thinking and your decisions. But most importantly, be you!
Year 12’s, tonight we send you off with every confidence that you will make the most of life’s opportunities. Go with our best wishes and always stay true to our motto, to Act Justly and honour God, wherever the road may take you!
Congratulations and God Bless the Class of 2021!
First Communion Service
A combined Year 4 and 5 First Communion Service was held on Monday 18 October. Traditionally a Year 4 event, the 2020 iteration was cancelled due to Covid restrictions. The 2021 event brought together Year 4 and Year 5 students for their first Eucharist, one of many that students at Peter Moyes participate in annually. It was wonderful to see so many parents join us for this very special occasion.
In conclusion, please keep an eye on the School App and our Facebook Page for the latest news and events as another busy year draws to a close. I look forward to seeing you on campus soon.
Every Blessing
Benjamin Lomas
