Welcome to the latest edition of the School Newsletter!

At the time of writing, we have already reached the halfway mark of Term One. In the first five weeks of Term there has already been two swimming carnivals, four Year level camps, auditions for Aladdin Junior and Dance Troupe, the Year 12 Ball, several Parent Information Evenings, CAS Sport, Blessing of the Leavers’ Jackets, not to mention weekly Chapel services and sub-school assemblies. While it has been a busy start, it has also been a very positive one with students settling into class routines and meeting new friends and staff members.

The Commissioning of Chaplain Jean-Pierre Schroeder

On Tuesday 28 February I was delighted to formally congratulate Reverend Jean-Pierre Schroeder on his commissioning as Senior Chaplain at an event in the Allan Shaw Centre.  The commissioning was presided over by The Right Reverend Kate Wilmot, Assistant Bishop of Perth. We also welcomed special guests The Venerable Tony Drayton, Archdeacon of Perth and The Reverend Peter Laurence OAM, Chief Executive Officer of the Anglican Schools Commission. Students from Year 5 through to Year 12 were also in attendance.

Reverend Jean-Pierre commenced as our Senior Chaplain in July 2021, having faithfully served our community as Chaplain since April 2017. In the normal course of events, the School’s Senior Chaplain would be officially commissioned no more than a few months following their initial appointment. However, due to the timing of his appointment, challenges with Covid restrictions and several other factors, the commissioning of Reverend Jean-Pierre as Senior Chaplain was unfortunately delayed.

The official commissioning of Reverend Jean-Pierre Schroeder as Senior Chaplain is a significant moment in the life of our school. It is a chance to formalise and congratulate Reverend Jean-Pierre on the important work he is already doing in our school community. From supporting, and promoting Christian Faith within the School, and providing pastoral support to students, staff, and parents, through to leading Chapel services, and teaching classes of Christianity, Religion and Life in the Secondary School, Reverend Jean-Pierre is a busy and hard working member of our school community. We look forward to many more years of love and support from Reverend Jean-Pierre

ChatGPT

You are no doubt aware that the topic of ChatGPT access in schools is being widely discussed in education circles and in the media. Peter Moyes Anglican Community School is adopting a cautious approach and has restricted student access to ChatGPT in the short term. This decision is in line with other age-restricted websites and applications which require users to be over 18.
 
While student access to ChatGPT will initially be restricted at school, teachers have been encouraged to use it as a tool to support learning and assessment. There is no doubt that ChatGPT and other similar technology has the potential to be a valuable tool for creating resources and facilitating learning, however we must remain vigilant of potential challenges for the assessment process, particularly take-home assignments. I will continue to keep families updated as we explore options for this rapidly evolving technology.

Parents and Friends Association

The annual AGM for the Parents and Friends Association was held on Wednesday 15 February. It was wonderful to see so many new faces, and some familiar ones, at the first meeting. On the night, the committee for 2023 was established and I am pleased to report that Mrs Kylie Roemermann is the new President. The P & F is already planning for some key events in 2023 including an Outdoor Movie Night, Quiz Night, and Primary School Colour Run, in addition to the usual assortment of events. I am so very grateful to the parents who give of their time voluntarily to enhance our School community and look forward to seeing parents at various events across the year.

Year 12 ATAR examination procedures – Small Group Moderation

The School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA) have always had a procedure in place for small cohorts of fewer than six students in a Year 12 course. Known as Small Group Moderation, this process requires two or more schools to be involved in the assessment delivery of the course to increase the combined group number for that pair of units.

The reason is related to statistics. Individual students in the smaller cohort may be subject to moderation anomalies from possible under-performances of a student or a few students in the ATAR course examination.

All students who are in a small course cohort at PMACS are involved in small group moderation. Where this occurs, Heads of Department ensure that their staff implement procedures to ensure school marks and grades from all partner schools are comparable. In addition, all assessments tasks are conducted under the same agreed conditions, including comparability marking, review of marks and mark adjustments. These same practices occur with multiple classes of a course at this School as a matter of course.

As all schools in the state see a reduction of student numbers taking ATAR courses, (currently fewer than 45% of all Year 12 students in WA) small group moderation continue to be part of our Year 12 courses.

The main messages that our students are given remain the same: each student should continue to work effectively throughout the year and maintain that same effort leading up to and during their 3-hour WACE examinations in November in order to provide the best academic outcome for both them and their cohort.

Parents attended the Year 12 Chapel on Wednesday 15 February for the formal blessing of the 2023 Leavers Jackets. Following a lovely service by Reverend Schroeder, the cohort were formally presented their Leavers Jackets. A student committee led by the Head of Year were actively involved in the entire design process from concept to final product. Students were surveyed for updates and tweaks to the final design to ensure student voices were best represented. The jackets once more are produced from 95% recycled bottles, keeping the students stylish all year round and sustaining an eco-friendly environment through its production.

Carnivals and large group gatherings have been a welcomed return at PMACS this year.

It was not just the temperature rising during our 2023 Inter-House Swimming Carnivals, however, the anticipation of the event coupled with outstanding House spirit was on the rise too.

All students demonstrated excellent House Spirit through supporting, participating and cheering. A very big congratulations also on the outstanding swimming shown across the two days.

Our overall Inter-House Champion House was awarded to Hollows with a final score of 1650. This years Spirit Award; The PMACCA Spirit Wolf was awarded to Durack.

Our Individual award recipients were as follows:

At 7:00am on Friday, 3 February 2023 32 music students and 3 staff travelled by bus to Christian Youth Camps in Baldivis, returning to school by 6:30pm. We joined music students and staff from several ASC schools to rehearse together for the first time for the ASC Combined Concert to be held in the Perth Concert Hall on Friday 31 March 2023. Our students were involved in the Massed Choir, Select Choir, Orchestra, Concert Band, and Strings Orchestra. It was a great opportunity to begin to learn this music and hear how the many parts sound together.  It was also great to meet the staff and students of our ASC schools.

The Year 10 Woodwork course builds on the skills gained in Middle School classes, introducing students to additional industrial machinery and processes applicable to older students. There is a higher expectation of the quality design elements, with regard to both research, diagrams and written articulation.

The Year 10 class are making a start on their first woodwork project for 2023. They are busy fine-tuning their carpentry skills to construct a small wood step. We all are looking forward to the final product.

Year 8 Science students have begun the year learning all about cells and microscopes. They are working very hard to learn all the new and complicated names of the cell parts and their functions. Students have been developing their practical skills in the laboratory preparing wet mount slides of onions and using microscopes for the first time.

Well done to Emma, Chloe, Anja, and Molly who went above and beyond by making cell models from candies, cakes, and cookies. The girls enjoyed their delicious creations with classmates at lunch.

Wednesday, March 29, the School community will come together for our second Special Event Day for the school Year. Special Event days are compulsory school days where students are encouraged to embrace their House Spirit and demonstrate the school values of Faith, Excellence, Courage, Respect, Compassion and Responsibility.

All students will take part in a 3km cross country event and a number of House novelty events. We encourage all to start preparing for this run.

Running Club – Thursday mornings 7:00am – 7:45am school oval. Meet at the downstairs gym changerooms. All welcome.

PMACS are proud to be a part of CAS Sports (Coastal Associated Schools). Here are a few photos of some of the teams we currently have competing in the Summer Series. 

It is the aim of the Coastal Associated Schools, to conduct interschool sport, encouraging participation, sportsmanship and healthy competition.

Member schools compete during the year in a range of activities:

• traditional carnivals in athletics, cross country and swimming

• fun participation lightning carnivals

• weekly summer and winter interschool sport

• representative & All Star teams and tours

• Inclusive sport program for students with disabilities.

On the 11 of February the graduating class of ’23 attended their Year 12 Ball. The night was filled with countless highlights, namely the dancing (shout out to Mr Hollingsworth for the Ballroom Dancing lessons) and the crazy accessories in the photobooth. As a class, we walked into an enchanted forest for a magical evening surrounded by our peers and special guests. The venue looked absolutely spectacular!

It was great to spend the evening with each other and it was an experience we will cherish long after we have left school.

We would like to extend a massive thank you to our Head of Year Mr Walker, Mrs Hiotis for her organising and the Tutors for making it such a special night for us.  

HRH Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh KG, KT, AK, is remembered for many things, but his lasting legacy will always be the youth awards programme that carries his name. The awards programme was founded in the United Kingdom in 1956 and has since expanded to 144 nations. The award recognises adolescents and young adults for completing a series of self-improvement tasks: fitness training, expeditions, projects, and rescue services. The award was initially for boys and was administered by John Hunt, who led the first successful ascent of Mount Everest in 1953. The first girls joined in September 1958.

Today, the Award is an internationally recognised programme, with over 8 million young people taking part since its inception. It aims to build skills, equipping young people for life and work, and playing a critical role in their development. Each programme is personalised which allows young people a structure to fulfil their passions and ambitions in a way that suits them.

It has three levels; bronze, silver, and gold and with assistance from adult leaders, participants select and set objectives in each of the following areas:

• Volunteering – undertaking services to individuals or the community
• Physical – improving in an area of sport, dance, or fitness activities
• Skills – developing practical and social skills and personal interest
• Expedition – planning, training for, and completing an adventurous journey

At Gold level, participants must do an additional Residential section, which includes staying and working away from home for five days, doing a shared activity.

To achieve an award, participants must work on each section for a minimum period and must be monitored and assessed by someone with knowledge of the chosen activity. Each progressive level requires more time and commitment from participants: Bronze 3-6 months; Silver 6-9 months; Gold 12-18 months.

Peter Moyes Anglican Community School is pleased to run the Ignite Award for students in Years 7 and 8.

The Ignite Award is a challenging program of discovery for young people aged 9 – 13 years and provides a framework to learn valuable skills, be physically active, assist others in the community and experience adventures. It is a great tool for young people to transition into secondary school and fosters positive self development and leadership skills.

There are 4 levels of Ignite Award:

Levels 3 & 4
To achieve any level of Ignite Award, young people create a unique program of activities across four activity sections, Physical Activity, Hobby, Volunteering and Adventure. Young people can complete the activities in a single session, or undertake their activities over a period of time.

Welcome back! What a holiday we've had, and hopefully, you are enjoying being back into the school routine.

It has been great to welcome our Primary School community back to school, and in particular, to welcome new students and parents at the start of the year. It has been an incredibly positive start to the school year, and I am grateful to the efforts of our staff, our students, and our families for working tirelessly to bring together a great beginning. Many year levels have been relocated to fit in the extra classes and despite this creating a logistical nightmare for staff having to move ‘house’ and then re-nest and make their rooms a serene environment for our students to learn in, it has been a successful transition. 

Both the Primary and Secondary teachers had a wonderful professional development day before schools started on ‘How students learn’ as part of the Visible Learning direction we have been developing over the last 2 years. We were able to explore the importance of students knowing success, and understanding the importance of designing surface, deep, and transfer learning within the visible learning landscape.

I am coming up to my ninth year at PMACS and nearly three of those have been dominated by COVID rules and life-challenging moments. However, starting the year clarifying our purpose and direction has been a positive start.  A PMACS education is not only about what we learn in Primary School, but how we develop and grow as human beings during the learning process.

As teachers, we have an amazing opportunity to work with parents to purposefully help our students to develop character, creativity, compassion, and resilience, and extend their knowledge of the world around us and their sense of wonder that will enable them to thrive in a complex and ever-changing world. At this stage of your child’s education, we are preparing our students for life beyond Primary School. This must be at the heart of everything we do. This is our purpose.

For me, this comes back to our responsibility to prepare our students to be strong academically so that they are both literate and numerate, and socially capable.

This will require a lot of work, commitment, and dedication. After a great summer, it is now time to roll up our sleeves, get on with the work at hand and strive to do our best in everything we do. I will be doing that with the Primary leadership team, our teachers, and all the Primary PMACS staff.

What we need from you is to help to ‘partner’ with us in support of your child/children in our School. As the parent, you are the first educator of your child and have a huge influence on their learning since birth. For the next phase, when your child begins school, you need to team up with us and especially your child’s teacher. Developing a strong and good relationship with your child’s teachers sends a powerful message to your child about the importance of school and learning.

Some tips to help have a successful year:

• Don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher. They like to really know your child through your eyes as well. Hence our 1:1 teacher/parent meeting was scheduled with you recently!
• Work together with us to support your child academically, emotionally, and socially.
• If there is a problem that is brought to your attention, be open to the situation and partner with us to find solutions that are best for your child.
• Remember both you and the staff collectively at school want the best for your child, so you need to work together to find the best strategies and actions.
• Trust us as a school to do what we know best as educators to support your child. We deal with students all the time and have many years of experience between us to draw on.
• Please attend any class parent meetings and events so that you are sending the message to your child that our Primary School is important and that what your child is doing is of value.

In the next week, we have our Year 4 Camp at Fairbridge Farm and our Year 6 Camp at Point Walter. Then following that I will fly to Canberra for a few days for meetings at a national advisory level with each State and Territory sector representative’s Primary Principal.  Upon my return will be our Swimming Carnival on Thursday 9th March at the HBF Joondalup Arena. 

NAPLAN for Years 3 and 5 only, will start on the following morning’s first thing:

• Wednesday 15 March 2023 - Writing
• Thursday 16 March 2023 - Reading
• Monday 20 March 2023 - Conventions of Language
• Tuesday 21 March 2023 - Numeracy

Teachers vs Student Dodgeball Game

The teachers took on the students in a lunchtime Dodgeball game. It was a fierce game with a lot of dodging, ducking, dipping, diving and dodging! 

Congratulations to the following students who were invited for receiving the most amount of House Points in the first 5 weeks of school- Belle, Ryver, Neve, Summer, Alyssa, Mason, Noah, Charly, Marcus and James Sturgeon.

It was a great way to end the week. 

PMACS Primary School and P&F Association welcome all families and friends to our FREE Family Movie Night. We will be showing "HOP", a G-rated movie. Gates open from 5pm. This will be an Outdoor Movie set up outside the Allan Shaw Centre on the grass area. Entry via Salerno Drive, Mindarie. Picnic chairs, blankets and food welcome. You are also welcome to purchase food from Fire Truck Pizza Truck, P&F Sausage Sizzle, Sweet Gatherings Coffee Van and the Zest Soft Serve Ice Cream Van. 

The Easter Bunny will visit prior to the movie starting, so come along with your family and friends for a fun filled evening.

The Primary School is celebrating this special day by asking students to come to School in FREE DRESS with 'DIVERSE' Hair. This event is a GOLD COIN donation.

Neurodiversity Celebration Week was started in 2018 by Siena Castellon when she was 16 years old. As an autistic student, who also has dyslexia, dyspraxia, and ADHD, she experienced significant challenges, prejudice and bullying throughout her education. Her negative educational experiences motivated her to launch Neurodiversity Celebration Week in 2018 to challenge the misconceptions and stereotypes that still prevent autistic people and people with learning disabilities from reaching their potential.

Neurodiversity Celebration Day/Week is a worldwide initiative that challenges stereotypes and misconceptions about autism and learning disabilities. 

Please join us in congratulating Mrs Flanigan who has been nominated for the 2023 Women Changing the World Awards, in the literature category. The Women Changing the World Awards presented by Opera Winfrey’s all-time favourite Guest, Dr. Terarai Trent, celebrate and recognize women achieving outstanding success. Mrs Flanigan also started 2023 with her book, A Deadly Disappearance Down Under being nominated for the 2022 Cozy Book of the Year.

Joel started racing karts 2 years ago at Wanneroo as a member of the Tiger Kart Club.
He quickly got to grips with the sport and he began receiving driver coaching in race cars at Wanneroo Raceway.
Late last year it was announced that Joel had won the 2023 Arise Racing Junior Driver Award.

This award is a scholarship given to a young driver who has the potential to compete at a professional level. Joel receives sponsorship and has a professional driver’s contract which also requires him to be an ambassador for Arise Racing.

Congratulations Joel, this is a fantastic opportunity we would like to wish him all the best for his upcoming race weekends throughout the year. 


 

This is such a lovely story! I’ve had the pleasure of teaching Grace since she began lessons in Year 2, aged seven. Her enthusiasm to develop her drum skills has been a joy to see. I’d like to wish her continued success, and huge congratulations for her Rockschool ‘Distinction Grade’ for 2022.

Bailey White has been selected once again! Later this term Bailey will be travelling to the UK and Europe to play football (soccer) with his team. They will be playing in 6 UK academies - Liverpool , Arsenal, West Ham, Watford, Chelsea and Crystal Palace. He then heads over to Portugal and Spain to play in their academies - Lisbon, Barcelona and Real Madrid. This will be an amazing experience for Bailey to be able to visit and play these top European club academies. We would like to congratulate Bailey on this fantastic achievement we look forward to hearing from you on your return.

In early February Divan competed in the U11's in shot put, triple jump and also in the state field relay where they placed 2nd. This was at the recent WA State Track and Field event. 

Congratulation Divan on your achievements. 

Kamika recently competed in the relay State Championships 4x200m where the team she was in placed 3rd winning a Bronze Medal. 

There were 14 teams across the state (Joondalup, Kingsway, Ridgewood, Swan Valley, Cockburn, Baldivis, Kwinana, Inglewood, UWA, Hamersley, Belmont, Dale, Melville and Bubury)

Kamika ran the second leg, a very tough leg as you are usually up against the second fastest athletes of the opposing teams. There was only 0.12 seconds between 2nd and 3rd place. it was a tight race with some good competition. 

Their team also came 4th in the 4X100m relay and the contest was even tighter. Congratulations Kamika this is a fantastic achievement.

Marcus recently took part in the WA Little Nipper State Championships held at Mullaloo Beach. This was a big event where 467 kids competed.

Marcus made it through the heats to the finals for the swim, semi-finals for the boards and achieved a silver medal (2nd place) on the sprints - a massive achievement against the best kids in the State! Congratulations Marcus we are very proud of you!

Loose parts play has been an important addition to the many activities our students can choose from during playtime and is a wonderful part of our playground because it supports the students to be creative in their play. Loose parts play allows opportunities to engage in creative and imaginary play. For this type of play to continue we need donations from our school community.

If you would like to donate pots, pans, old towels or sheets, plastic kitchen utensils etc. please deliver to Ms Shimmings, Mrs Robinson or Mrs Lawton. We would greatly appreciate any donations.

Information for families

The Australian Federal Police through the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation is seeing a concerning global trend of teenage males being targeted to send explicit images of themselves and then blackmailed. This is called sexual extortion, or sextortion.

The AFP is urging families to have important safety conversations ahead of the school holidays to prevent young people from becoming victim. This crime can have serious wellbeing and psychological impacts. 

How does sextortion start?

• Unsolicited friend and follow requests on social media
• Direct messages on one app and then being asked to keep chatting on a secondary app
• Conversations suddenly and quickly becoming sexualised
• Requests for sexualised images or content. 

What can families do?

• Have open and regular conversations about your child’s online activities and interactions
• Know what platforms, apps and games they are using and who they are interacting with
• Remain open and approachable, victims will be reluctant to come forward if they feel they will be punished or blamed
• Ensure your child knows that it is okay to leave conversations if they feel uncomfortable or unsafe
• Support your child and know how to respond. The Online blackmail and sexual extortion response kit has been created to recognise sextortion and get help. 

The Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation is here to keep young people safe from online sexual exploitation and abuse. 

The expo is targeted at families in the aim to provide support to parents and students with mathematics learning at home by showcasing interactive resources. It will be a fun, interactive day with lots of opportunity to see a variety of resources that make learning fun, and there are prizes to be won on the day!

A lot of children between ages 4-17 experience a mental health condition and it's imperative we continue to become aware of this issue. NEW Quinns Rocks MyTime Parent and Carer Support Groups  

These groups are free for all the community to access.  We offer a warm, safe environment for parents and carers of children with disabilities, below 18 years, to come together and share stories, supports and resources.  The groups are offered throughout school terms and are facilitated by our experienced staff members that have knowledge around Autism, NDIS and much more. We offer playleader supervision for children 6 years and under while parents and carers get the chance to have a coffee and a chat.   Details of these exciting new groups are below:
