Principal’s Notes
As I write my notes for the latest edition of the School Newsletter, I have been reflecting on what has been another unique term. At the time of writing, the School has managed close to 200 positive Covid cases and almost 400 close contacts. Despite the obvious challenges these numbers have presented, I have been overwhelmingly proud of our community’s response to the evolving level of restrictions and the resilience shown by all students in the face of adversity. Pleasingly, we have managed to maintain a sense of normalcy by continuing with many of our usual events in a Covid-safe manner. Just last week we ran our Secondary Cross Country Carnival in a modified format to enable all students to participate. This is on top of other activities such as Incursions, Peer Support and our Co-Curricular Programme which have all proceeded this term, albeit in a slightly different manner! I am tremendously grateful to all staff for their flexibility in striving to maintain these opportunities for our students.
I trust you will enjoy reading the latest edition of the School Newsletter which provides a snapshot of the happenings at Peter Moyes Anglican Community School over the past month.
NAPLAN
The National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests are an annual assessment of skills in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy. Students complete four assessments: reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar, and punctuation) and numeracy. To prepare students for the assessments, practice tests have been conducted over the past few weeks. The practice tests are an important way for schools to test network capacity and resolve any technical issues prior to the official tests in early May. Parents are reminded that while NAPLAN provides a useful snapshot of student progress, the School continually collects formative and summative feedback to monitor student progress and we encourage parents to regularly check SEQTA and engage with their child’s teacher to monitor progress. On another note, ACARA have announced that from 2023, all NAPLAN assessments will be conducted in Term 1. This will allow for a speedier turnaround of results for parents and provide greater scope for schools to adjust teaching and learning programmes.
SCHOLARSHIPS
I am pleased to report that the School had an overwhelming response for our 2023 Scholarship programme. The School received over 70 applications from current and external students. We appreciate the time taken by students to complete the application and it has been fascinating to learn a little more about each student’s achievements and personality. The process of narrowing such a large applicant pool was a challenging one, especially when we had so many worthy candidates. The School conducted a rigorous shortlisting process, to determine which students should proceed to the interview stage. These interviews are currently underway, with final scholarship allocations to be determined by the end of Term, and families notified of the outcome by the end of the School holidays.
COVID-19 UPDATE
As we near the end of term, I wish to thank all of our staff, students, and families for helping to support and care for our community as WA heads towards the peak of COVID-19 cases. In pleasing news, current restrictions are being eased in time for the commencement of Term 2. These changes will mean a return to a more normal mode of operation, with Chapel, assemblies and larger events permitted. Furthermore, parents will be allowed back on site next term for carnivals, parent teacher meetings, learning journeys and all our usual events. I will communicate the relevant details to all families at the start of next term and I encourage you to monitor the School App, Facebook, and our website for regular updates. If you have any concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact the school at admin@pmacs.wa.edu.au
PARENTS AND FRIENDS ASSOCIATION
The annual AGM for the Parent’s and Friends Association was held on Tuesday 29 March. I am grateful for the parents who attended the meeting on Zoom and I congratulate the following parents who have been elected to the P & F Committee: Sarah Turbutt – President, Kylie Roemermann – Vice President, Sarah Lanes – General Member, and Jazmina Chamberlain – General Member. The Committee is already looking forward to organising various events including a Primary School Disco, the Twilight Markets, a Quiz night and other assorted community activities.
As the term draws to a close, it is now vital that all students take the time to refresh and recharge over the School holiday period. This includes switching off their laptop and taking a complete break from school to focus on family, friends, and the things they love to do. I wish all staff, students, and parents a safe, relaxing, and enjoyable holiday break and look forward to seeing everyone back on site in Term 2.
Every Blessing.
