Principal's Notes
Welcome to the latest edition of the School Newsletter! It is hard to believe that we are almost in spring and our Year 12’s are down to their last few weeks of School. As always, PMACS has had a very busy start to Term 3, much of which is detailed in the pages that follow. Some particular highlights for me include:
Peter Moyes Week
This year the School trialled a variation to the usual Peter Moyes Day celebrations by hosting a series of events across the week. First Nations Day, Diversity Day, Cultural Celebration Day, and Inclusivity Day were all celebrated with activities and classes related to each respective focus area. Throughout the week students and staff participated in Indigenous workshops, circus games, art projects, music, cultural cuisine, craft, sports, video games and much more. Events occurred in both Primary and Secondary School, culminating in a Peter Moyes Day Service and Olympiad. The Secondary Service was a particular highlight, with Class of 2016 Alumni, Sam Maher, delivering a stirring speech on the alternative pathways that students can take to achieve their goals. I would like to acknowledge the Parents and Friends Association for their support of the week and the numerous parents who volunteered their time to coordinate various activities. I look forward to Peter Moyes Week becoming a much-loved tradition at our school.
Anglicare WA Sleepout
The annual Anglicare Sleepout was held on Friday 20 August. This year the event was hosted at Optus Stadium, with 30 Year 10 students participating. The Anglicare Sleepout aims to raise awareness of the significant homelessness issues in our state, with monies raised helping to keep the Street Connect Bus on the streets of Perth. Street Connect Staff work every day with young people across Perth who are experiencing homelessness. For this year’s event, close to $150,000 was raised by the 450 students who attended. $7,000 of this total was raised by PMACS students – a wonderful achievement. The students were joined at this event by me, Ibu Kawulusan and Ibu Hartono. The students participated in a homelessness simulation activity before lining up at a soup kitchen for a bread roll and pumpkin soup. They then made themselves comfortable for the night with a 3mm piece of cardboard as their mattress. The students (and staff!) slept on the main concourse of the stadium, with temperatures dropping below 5 degrees and the ambient noise and lighting meaning most had a very interrupted night’s sleep! I extend my sincere congratulations to all students who participated in this very worthwhile initiative.
Student Leadership
The process for appointing the School’s Head Boy and Head Girl for 2022 has now been finalised. At PMACS we run an extensive process, with the candidates first delivering a speech to key staff including their Head of Year and members of the Executive Team, with constructive feedback given to each student. The candidates then refined their speeches before presenting to the Year 11 cohort. Finally, the students presented their speech to all Secondary students. This year we had five male and three female students participate in this process. Following their final speech, votes were cast, with three male and three female students short-listed for a final interview with the Principal, Associate Principal Senior School and Dean of Students (Secondary). After a very difficult decision, I am delighted to share with you the 2022 Senior Student Leadership Team:
Head Girl - Olivia Williams
Head Boy – Travis Woolley
Deputy Head Girl – Eleanor McNamara
Deputy Head Boy – Noah Carey
Chapel Prefect – Eliza Moffitt
They will commence official duties in Term 4, but they already have a few dates for their dairies in the next few weeks!
Other Events
Despite the threat of inclement weather, the Middle and Senior School Athletics Carnivals went ahead on Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12 August respectively. Attendance on both days was above average and participation excellent, with many parents also on site supporting the events. The Upper Primary Carnival was held on Friday 20 August with just a hint of rain in the morning before a bright sunny afternoon. It was wonderful to see so many students trying their best at each event and a wonderful sense of House spirit displayed through costume and hair spray.
The latest production from Snapshot Youth Theatre Company, Wizard of Oz, was performed last week and has received rave reviews. Due to popular demand the season was extended by a further three shows. Despite some significant challenges due to Covid and the regular flu season, the students involved put on an outstanding show, led by Director Peta Flannigan. Make sure you keep an eye on our Facebook page for news of further productions.
I trust you will enjoy the latest edition of the Newsletter which captures some of the highlights of our busy school. I look forward to seeing you on campus soon.
Every Blessing.
