Principal’s Notes
Welcome to the latest edition of the School Newsletter!
It has been an exciting few days for Peter Moyes Anglican Community School as we celebrate the extraordinary win by West Australian Jai Hindley at the Giro d’Italia. Jai is a former student of our school and his mum, Mrs Robyn Hindley, is a valued member of our staff. To be the first Australian to win the Giro d’Italia is testament to Jai’s commitment and hard work over many years, traits which he also displayed as a student. We are thrilled that Mrs Hindley had the opportunity to fly to Italy to cheer on Jai and be there to congratulate him at the finish line.
VAPING AND eSCOOTERS
The School has recently written to families of Secondary School students about two important issues, namely, vaping, and the use of eScooters. These issues have been addressed at recent assemblies, including making all students aware of the School’s Policies and Procedures as available on our website. I encourage parents to review the previous correspondence on these issues and to note the following key resources which may be of use:
Vaping - Dr Justin Coulson, one of Australia’s most trusted parenting experts has many useful resources for parents and young people on his website Happy Families.
https://www.happyfamilies.com.au/
His podcast episode on vaping is also available through Instagram.
eScooters - A summary of the road rules set in place by the Road Safety Commission can be found on their website:
www.wa.gov.au/organisation/road-safety-commission/erideable
We remind all students that eScooters should not be ridden without a helmet, or when on campus, and all road rules must be followed at all times.
COVID-19 UPDATE
The start of Term 2 has seen our school return to an almost normal mode of operation. It has been wonderful to have Parents and Carers back on site attending carnivals, assemblies, and special events. Even though restrictions have eased, we kindly ask parents to practice social distancing where possible and to not attend campus if you have any Covid symptoms.
To help keep our community safe, the School has recently distributed over 26,000 RATs that were given to us by the Association of Independent Schools Western Australia (AISWA), equating to 20 RATs per student. Thank you to all parents and students who have already collected their RATs. Unclaimed RATs can be collected from Main Administration by Friday 3 June.
We encourage all members of our community to continue adopting a cautious approach and to use the RATs to ensure their children are ok to come to school. Even with a negative RAT result, children who are displaying symptoms should remain at home until they recover.
I encourage you to monitor the School App, Facebook, and our website for regular updates in relation to Covid-19. If you have any concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact the school at admin@pmacs.wa.edu.au
NAPLAN AND OLNA
Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 have recently completed their scheduled National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests. I was delighted with the way students engaged with the tests, particularly with the various challenges presented by Covid. I am pleased to report that close to 100% of students were able to complete all assessments – a testament to the resilience of our students, and the ability of Mr Wood and Mr Alchin to coordinate catch up sessions! With the majority of Australian schools now completing NAPLAN assessments online, we anticipate receiving the results earlier than in previous years. Further details will be shared with all families in due course
Results for the first round of OLNA assessments have been received and communicated to relevant families. The Acting Head of Teaching and Learning, Mr Keith Briggs, has already met with key staff to analyse these results and to discuss strategies that will assist students to meet the benchmark in Round 2. The School has a subscription to an OLNA software package that enables students to practise OLNA-style questions. Students yet to pass OLNA will be using this software regularly as directed by their teachers. The School has also added multiple OLNA sessions for small group support. Parents with any concerns regarding OLNA should contact Mr Briggs via email kbriggs@pmacs.wa.edu.au
In concluding, I trust you will enjoy reading the latest edition of the School Newsletter and I wish all staff, students, and parents a safe, relaxing, and enjoyable break for the upcoming WA Day weekend.
Every Blessing.
