Emillie (Millie) Foster (Year 11) has been named as one of two winners of The West Australian Young Travel Writer 2018 Competition from over 300 applicants.
Millie will soon travel to the Coral Coast on her first travel journalism assignment to research, write, take photos, shoot video and work on social media and digital content. She will visit Monkey Mia and Dirk Hartog Island for three days and two nights from 16th to 18th May.
Millie says that she never expected to win and plans to make the most of this once in a lifetime opportunity.
“I didn’t expect to win but wanted to give it a go. I am expecting the trip to have a very full itinerary and I’m really looking forward to this new life experience,” Millie says.
I love the idea of writing and taking photographs for such an exciting purpose and I’m eager to learn more about travel writing and digital photography on the trip. It’s going to be incredible.”
Associate Principal - Senior School, Mrs. Natalie Shaw, says that Millie is a very deserving recipient of the prize.
“The School is thrilled for Millie to have this opportunity. She is a high-calibre student with an inquiring mind who has already demonstrated her adaptability in the face of challenges. Millie will use the 21st Century skills required for future success. We wish her well and look forward to the results of her travel assignment,” Mrs Shaw says.
The West Australian travel journalist, Grace Millimaci, who will take this year's winners on assignment, says travel writing is described as one of the best jobs in the world, so this is a rare opportunity, especially for a teenager.
"Our Young Travel Writer competition proves that this State has many talented students. Choosing this year's winner was tough because the quality of entries was so impressive," Grace says.
"Millie should be proud of her achievement. She will get to see a beautiful part of Western Australia and then share her knowledge with The West Australian’s readers. This isn't a holiday - the two winners will research the area, write articles, take photos, shoot footage and create digital content.”
Upon her return, Millie will have her travel write-up and photographs published in The West Australian and online.
