Year 8 Students are studying the topic of Cyberbullying in Health. They watched a video called ‘Tagged’ and have completed a journal reflection after watching the video. They also now have an assessment related to Cyberbullying. Below is a Health Journal reflection from a Year 8 student, plus a link to both the video ‘Tagged’ and a reminder of the assessment that students are currently completing. You are encouraged to watch the video with your child and discuss the issues that are raised. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s Health Teacher or Tutor.

Year 8 Cyber-Bullying Journal Reflection

In our Health lessons we have been learning about how a rock, a paddle and a balloon all fall into place with bullying.
• A rock represents throwing stones; this was shown in the movie ‘Tagged’ with the character Jack, who found out that his ex-girlfriend, Kate, was the one who posted the picture of Ben and Chloe, with their arms around each other. When Jack found this out, he posted inappropriate photos of Kate to the whole school and this was related to throwing rocks at each other.
• A paddle represents paddling out of poo creek; shown in the movie when Kate took the initiative to move schools when she was getting bullied because of the photo Jake sent to everyone in the school.
• A balloon represents a person’s self-esteem. This was shown in the clip when Kate was threatening Razz that if she told Jack what Kate did, then Kate would post inappropriate photos of Razz.

After watching the video ‘Tagged’, we know that the bully was Kate. We know this because she would deflate other people’s self-esteem so she has more self-esteem. This was shown when she threatened Razz that she would post pictures of her at a party if she told Jack or anyone what she did. She also persuaded the three girls into doing it by saying that it was just for fun. Another thing that Kate did to justify why she is a bully; she tried to ruin her ex-boyfriend’s relationship with Chloe by posting photos of Chloe and Ben with their arms around each other. I think Kate’s destiny later on in the future might be that she has no friends, because they realise what she is doing to them and that she is a bully. She may have worse consequences than she has had before, she has done it to Razz and may well do it again.

If Kate had more forgiveness this may have changed the way she acted in the movie. For example, if she had forgiven Jack for breaking up with her, then she would not have done all these horrible things to him and she would have not sought revenge by claiming Chloe and Ben were going out. If she had more self-esteem and confidence in herself, she would not have tried to put down Razz, deflating her self-esteem, in order to boost her own.

In the movie there were more than one person who could have done something to stop the cycle of bullying. Some people could have been Chloe. If Chloe saw the post she could have gone up to Jack and told him the truth as well as Ben. Jack could have stopped the cycle by not going up to Ben and punching him as soon as he saw the photo of him and Chloe. Instead, Jack could have gone up to Ben and asked him to explain the photo. The girl with the blonde hair that hangs out with Kate and Razz could have stood up for herself, just like Razz did, and said to Kate that what they were doing had gone too far and they should tell someone.
