On Monday 21st August, the Year 8 cohort went on an educational excursion to Quinns Beach. We departed on foot at around 8:30am and arrived just before 9:00am, where we gathered on the grass area and split into our groups. We first surveyed our natural surroundings and then addressed questions on site and situation.

After this, we went down on the beach where it was very windy and overcast. We walked to the southern end and completed a field sketch of examples of erosion made from destructive waves. We talked about solution pipes and notches and how these features were formed by strong waves constantly hitting the rocks and eroding them. We gathered a soil sample of calcareous sand (sandy soil created from limestone) and stuck it into out workbooks. Following the conclusion of this task, we headed to the northern end of the beach and completed a second field sketch outlining the effects of constructive waves leaving material in the swash and resulting in sand dunes. Once everyone had completed his or her sketch we had a short 15-minute recess break on the lawn area in front of the café. Re-energised we completed our workbooks with our group leaders and then set off on our journey back to school.
