As part of the Year 7 Science course students are studying habitats, interactions and classification. In order to get a better insight into the diverse ecosystems that exist, all Year 7 students attended an excursion to Perth Zoo on 25th May 2018.
Having just had some glorious weather the previous days this was the day that decided to rain. Students got off the bus to a deluge of rain, luckily the only major downpour though. With the weather being decidedly cooler it did, however, mean that the animals were out more on display.
Students were split into groups and participated in three main activities. The first was a talk by the Zoo about ‘Fantastic Beasts and how to name them’. This allowed many students to explore the differences between a snake and a lizard with the main difference being if they had ears or not. Students also had the opportunity to touch a snake, if they dared!
Meanwhile, other groups explored the African Savannah and Asian rainforest, seeing animals such as Elephants, Rhinoceros and Orang-utans. The final groups explored some of the more local animals during the Australian Bushwalk especially animals such as the Quokka, Numbat and Kangaroo.
A great day was had by all! I would like to thank all of the Year 7 staff for coming to the Zoo as well as the parent volunteers who made the day a real success.
