In late Term 3, Year 2 looked into past and present technologies. To make the students excited, they explored and dissected old cell phones, which led to the big question, ‘What technology can we create to help the world?’ From there, their inquiry project was born.

In order to understand what technology could do, they went to Scitech to explore and be inspired. They came back with a plethora of ideas ranging from Robot-Mum-Helpers to Blood Clot Detectors to Rain Water Microwaves that convert rain water into food for the homeless. Their ideas were endless!

After discussing their ideas with peers, it was time to plan. Designs were drawn and diagrams were labelled. Students made sure to consult friends throughout the process for constant feedback on improving their inventions. When the design was completed, students created their machines using a variety of materials brought from home and from school. As they built, they improved and reflected on their drawings. They modified their designs based on the needs of their machine and what was available. When they completed their inventions, the students were eager to show what they had created.

The first ever Year 2 STEAM Expo was held at the end of Term 3 in the Western Foyer. Parents and all Lower Primary students came to view and listen to the students talk about their inventions. Students and parents prompted the Year 2 students to explain how the inventions worked and what world problems they were helping to solve.

The Year 2 students loved showing off their hard work and were very appreciated to have had the opportunity to receive comments about on their inventions.
