Back in August, two teams of Year 5 and Year 6 AE PMACS students competed in the Perth Tournament of Minds contest at ECU. One team tackled the STEM challenge and the other took on Social Science.
All of the students had to work well together for six weeks, using problem solving and ingenuity to come up with a creative solution to the challenge.
The Social Science team had to portray the discovery of the remains of a fence and explain the reasons for its construction, and fall into disrepair, including the intended and unintended consequences. During their presentation, they explained the political and historical context which they had set in Antarctica in the aftermath of the Falklands War.
The STEM challenge was technically complicated, they had to design and manufacture a working model of a new hybrid species, which could move and make a sound. They also made a video enacting the discovery of the new species.
The STEM team came in the top three in the State. They competed on Sunday against the other teams, and they won! Which means that they will be representing Western Australia at the International Finals in Darwin next month.
But wait, there’s more! The STEM team also achieved the joint top score in the State for Creativity, receiving a massive trophy.
Social Science Team:
Dion Gilling, Jack Slade, Aanishka Sen, Hayley Mann, Matthew Linnell, Jade White, Samantha Davey
STEM Team:
Toby Murphy, Teagan Edwards, Kayley Johnson, Dana Harrison, Geneva Dunlop, Zac McNeair, Sophie Ashurst
Congratulations to all those students involved!
