On Friday 17th of August, the School Community celebrated Peter Moyes Day. The day began with a service for Primary School students, followed by a Middle and Senior School Service. We were honoured to have the Assistant Bishop of Perth, the Right Reverend Jeremey James, the Reverend Peter Laurence OAM, Chief Executive Officer of the Anglican Schools Commission the Member for Burns Beach, the Hon. Mark Folkard MLA, Chair of School Council, Mr John Filippone, Mayor of Wanneroo, Mayor Tracey Roberts and Rector of St Cecilia's Anglican Church, Reverend Paul Howells join us for this special occasion.
Peter Moyes Day, is a day when we celebrate the man after whom the School is named. It is fitting that we celebrate a man who has left such an indelible mark on education in Western Australia. Peter Moyes led Christ Church Grammar School for 30 years, leading the School from the brink of closure and improving their academic standing. Peter Moyes was also Chairman of the Anglican Schools Commission, laying the foundation for the organisation we know today, one that is currently responsible for 14 schools, 11 here in Western Australian and 3 in the Eastern States. He also played a pivotal role in training new school Principals. I think it is safe to say that Peter Moyes, the man, made an outstanding contribution to education in Western Australia.
This year we welcomed back Miss Emma King from the graduating class of 2011. Miss King was our guest speaker and reflected on her experience at Peter Moyes Anglican Community School and her life since, including her time as a player for Collingwood in the AFLW League and her recent trade to North Melbourne. Emma also spoke of her studies, encouraging students to believe in themselves and follow their dreams. It was a delight to have Emma present for our special day and I thank her for an excellent speech.
A highlight of the Secondary service was the presentation of the Peter Moyes Day awards. Each year, a male and female from each sub-school are awarded a Shield, Certificate, Peter Moyes Day Pin and Book Voucher for best exemplifying the Peter Moyes philosophy of ‘Personal Excellence, with Compassion for Others’. This year’s recipients were Jack Slade and Sophie Byrne from Primary School, Grace Foster and Mekhi Adams from Middle School and Caylem Weeks and Hannah Kelly from Senior School. Congratulations to all award winners!
During the Secondary service, students were treated to an outstanding performance of Stevie Wonder’s Higher Ground. Performing a version more closely related to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers single, students Harry Buck, Jacob Budd-Doyle, Byron Horgan and Amy MacDonald performing as Young Dilemma’ delivered an energetic and outstanding performance.
Once the formalities were completed, students across the School engaged in a variety of enjoyable activities including Theatre Sports, Karaoke, Meditation, Arts, Sports and assorted Cultural Pursuits.
Next year will be a special year in our history, with June 2019 marking 20 years from when the first sod on this parcel of land was turned, so commencing Stage One of the School’s Master Building Plan. We have come a long way in the last 20 years with the final stage of the Master plan, the new School Chapel, set for completion by Easter next year.
It is an exciting time to be involved with Peter Moyes Anglican Community School and I am very much looking forward to celebrating Peter Moyes Day in the years ahead.
