You may be aware that in recent weeks there has been a great deal of media attention and discussion about the Netflix series “13 Reasons Why”. This Netflix Original series depicts the suicide of a 17 year old student who dictates her reasons for killing herself onto audiotape and then sends the 13 tapes to the 13 people who she deems 'responsible' for her decision.
In addition to a segment on the ABC expressing concerns about the series, both Headspace and Mental Health First Aid have indicated their reservations about the series. They have prepared resources that can be accessed by clicking the links below:

The overall message from authorities suggest that it is important that, as parents, we are open and honest with young people in relation to the topics presented in the series and to make sure that we have open discussions about this series with our children if you are aware that they have watched or heard about it. It is important that we impart the message that there are many avenues of support for our children starting at home with us, as this is a message that is not conveyed in the series.
The School is wishing to make you aware of the series, as it appears that it may well become well known to many teenagers. As always, should you have any questions or would like to discuss issues that have arisen in discussing the series with your child, please contact the Senior School Counsellor (seniorschoolcounsellor@pmacs.wa.edu.au) or Middle School Counsellor (middleschoolcounsellor@pmacs.wa.edu.au).
