Year 7 and 9 students have been involved in designing, planning, researching and presenting an Independent Study Project. These projects allowed students to develop analytical and critical thinking skills in an area that they were passionate about. Each student was responsible for collating information and interviewing a member of the community who had knowledge in the area that they were investigating. Projects included the most effective design of cricket bats, the calming effects of pressure therapy for students with a learning disability and how we can all contribute to developing a more inclusive and positive culture within our own community.
As part of the Year 7 Extension Program I researched, designed and created Weighted Blankets suitable for children with disabilities (mainly Autism and Anxiety) and any younger aged child. These blankets will provide relief from anxiety, fidgeting and stress and will calm the children considerably. I enjoyed the process of collecting the materials and making the blankets. These blankets will be donated to the Kindy and Pre-Primary students of Peter Moyes to help them calm down.

As part of the Year 9 Extension Program, I researched, designed and created the “Making a Difference Project.” The aim of this project was to raise awareness of the roles everyone can play to contribute to a better world. Through my research, I realized that ‘making a difference’ doesn’t always mean doing something to change the world, rather, it can mean making a difference to yourself, family, friends, the community and even strangers!
It never matters how big or small an action is, the only thing that matters is the effort and mindset to make someone’s life better. By creating posters, I aimed to motivate and encourage my peers to step out and do something special or even something small such as smiling or giving someone a hug. Whether it is something big and special or something easy and small, they all make a difference.

As part of the Year 7 Extension Program I researched, designed and created a cricket bat that is suitable for attacking batsman. This bat will allow batsman to play shots with power without having to hit the ball extremely hard. I enjoyed making the cricket bat model and designing it. My goal is to make a better cricket bat model next time.
