On Wednesday 21st June, Peter Moyes Anglican Community School hosted the Fifth Anglican Schools Commission Piano Competition. A record ten WA ASC schools were involved - Peter Moyes ACS, St James ACS, Swan Valley ACS, John Septimus Roe ACS, Peter Carnley ACS, St Marks ACS, Frederick Irwin ACS, John Wollaston ACS, Georgiana Molloy Anglican School and St George’s Anglican Grammar School – took part. Over 150 piano students (also a record) played in front of four adjudicators. The event comprised 13 morning heats in six different categories with the winners going through to the final at 12:30pm.

24 PMACS students participated with five making it through to the finals. Eric Quinton won the Faith Category, Abbey James was 2nd in the Justice Category, whilst once again, Joscelyn Melendez and Amelie White won the Respect Category for duets. Amelie White also won the Diversity Category for her piano composition, was second overall and she and Joscelyn were placed third overall for their duet. In addition we had six student helpers and the event was compered by Head Girl, Astha Sinha.

During his speech the Reverend Peter Lawrence OAM announced that the ASC’s eastern state schools are in the process of organising their own ASC Piano Competition based on our model and are planning to send this year’s winner to the 2018 ASC Piano Competition.

We give special thanks to all of the students who competed and their families and teachers, as well as the student helpers and PMACS staff who also assisted in so many different ways including catering, supervising, cleaning and technical work. We thank the school administration, the ASC and the ASC Heads/Directors of Music for their ongoing support and assistance. We especially thank Andrew Frankish for a variety of roles including photography and Bronwyn Booth whose work in organising us all was outstanding and hugely appreciated.

Certificates of participation, trophies and medallions and a highlights video of the event will shortly be sent to the Schools. It was a great opportunity for our ASC students to share their extraordinary piano playing skills and love of music.

Bravo
