One of the subjects available to students in Senior School is Children, Family and Community. As the name suggests, we learn a lot about children in this class! We focus on a variety of topics – preconception, pregnancy, birth, newborns, toddlers, children and more. The class are given a variety of assessments throughout the year to consolidate what they have learned about each topic, but I think it is safe to say that when learning about babies, nothing beats the real thing!
On Monday 10th September, one of the Year 10 Children, Family and Community classes had a little visitor! We were lucky enough to meet Layla – the daughter of our very own Mr. Carr! Layla is three months old and she is such a happy baby. Her mum, Caroline, brought her in to our class and spoke to the students about being pregnant, giving birth, breastfeeding and what it’s like to have a newborn and a toddler at home!
The class had many questions for Caroline, which were answered honestly – they didn’t hold back with their questions and she didn’t hold back with her answers! It was an excellent insight into both the joys and hardships of motherhood. While Caroline answered questions, she also bathed Layla, who loved the special attention she was receiving.
After Layla was bathed and dressed, the best part of her visit began – cuddles! The students were so gentle with Layla and absolutely adored her, just as she adored them. They passed her around, reluctantly letting go so someone else could have their turn. While she was passed around, the class continued to speak with Caroline about Layla and motherhood in general.
We would like to thank Caroline for taking time out of her day to visit us, and we hope to see Layla again soon!
