It has long been understood that learning doesn’t just take place in a classroom and the first half of the term has given Middle School students plenty of opportunities to shine in their areas of strength or interest. The performance of ‘The Lion King Jr.’ was simply spectacular and it was difficult to comprehend at times that the oldest student in the show was only in Year 9! It was truly a magnificent production and student, parent and staff commitment must be recognised for delivering such a delightful production. We were blessed in terms of the weather for the Inter-House Athletics Carnival, won by Durack House, and successful students have already completed in a Personal Best Athletics meet in preparation for the ACC Athletics Carnival later in the term.

Within curriculum areas we have celebrated all things science in Science Week in addition to selected students having the opportunity to travel to John Septimus Roe Anglican Community School for a lively and enjoyable concert by Indonesian pop star, ‘Michael J’. This concert was enjoyed by several schools and we thank JSRACS for their hospitality in providing not only the venue this year, but also an Indonesian lunch for our students. The concert was timed to fit in well with Indonesian Week, which was held during Week 6 of the term. A visit by Ibu Consulate-General and a band performance on Monday 20th August started a busy week of games and celebrations.

The Drama department has also been full of vitality and energy with Year 9 students undertaking ‘Circus Skills and Performance’ as one of the elective subjects this semester. Thankfully the only plates they are learning to spin are plastic ones!

Friday 17th August saw all students participating in the Peter Moyes Day service and also in different activities. The service was led by Bishop Jeremy James, Assistant Bishop of Perth, with several invited guests, including Mayor of Wanneroo, Tracey Roberts, Rev. Peter Lawrence AOM, Rev. Paul Howells, Rector of St Cecilia’s parish and our guest speaker, Emma King, alumni student and women’s AFL player signed to North Melbourne Football Club. The creed of Peter Moyes Day is ‘personal excellence with compassion for others’ and the theme was a consistent one throughout the service; in the bible reading from the prophet Micah, the homily from Bishop Jeremy, the speech by Rev. Peter Lawrence AOM and the presentation to the two Middle School winners, Grace Foster and Mekhi Adams. Once again student talent was displayed with the School Band and also ‘Young Dilemma’ showcasing their musical abilities. The afternoon brought fun and laughter with various activities for Year 9 students and the Theatre Sports Inter-House Grand Final for Year 7 & 8 students. The cheering, chanting and quick wit of students made for a very entertaining afternoon and I would like to congratulate Hollows House on their win and also Ms Peta Flanigan for hosting such an enjoyable afternoon.

The term shows no sign of abating, culminating in Year 8 Camp in Week 10 of the term so students enjoy the learning that is taking place both in and out of the classroom in the coming weeks.
